Master Golf Driving: Gaining More Power
If there is one thing that most golfers want above anything else on the course, it is more distance. Not only is it fun to hit it farther than your playing partner, but longer drives mean shorter approach shots – and hopefully lower scores as well. Of course, that power won’t do you much good if you can’t control it and get the ball in the fairway more often than not. When the combination of power and accuracy comes together successfully, you will be a big step closer to improving your game.
When you set out to learn how to hit the ball farther, try using the tips below to help you achieve that goal.
- Improve your tempo. Distance off the tee isn’t just about brute strength or trying to overpower the golf ball. Rather, it is a product of good tempo and letting the speed accumulate naturally through the swing. Specifically, you need to have good tempo as you transition from the backswing to the downswing so you can bring the club down into the ball at just the right time. Getting your whole body to work together properly is key to adding distance, and that is accomplished by having a smooth tempo from backswing to downswing.
- Add width. The golf club accumulates speed as it moves down into the ball, so the longer distance the club travels, the more speed it can generate. Adding width to your golf swing opens up a world of power potential that you might not have had access to if you have been using a narrow swing up to this point. Focus on the left arm (for a right handed golfer) and make sure it is reaching well back behind you during the backswing. As long as your left arm doesn’t get bent and in close to your body, you should be able to maintain nice width in the swing.
- Trust your swing. Power can be lost right at impact simply by not trusting your swing and trying to ‘hold on’ as you go through the ball. No matter what you have done right or wrong in your swing leading up to impact, you need to trust yourself and just hit the shot with confidence. Having that confidence to swing all the way through the shot will allow you to maximize your swing speed and help you achieve you best-possible distance.
